Elizabeth Flood is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Painting and Drawing at SUNY Purchase College, School of Art+Design. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the American landscape, where she explores environmental transformation, erosion, and gestural expression through painting and drawing.
Educational Background:
- BA in History and Religious Studies, University of Virginia
- MFA in Painting, Boston University
Flood’s research investigates the turbulent and evolving nature of land and sea, often incorporating physical materials from the landscapes she engages with, such as those from the Cape Cod National Seashore. Her multicanvas works reflect atmospheric color and textured, relief-like surfaces that evoke calluses and etched stone, symbolizing endurance and impact. She maintains a practice of artistic vigilance, akin to historical life-saving stations, bearing witness to a dynamic and entropic environment.
Flood has been recognized with numerous awards and fellowships, including two Visual Arts Fellowships at the Fine Arts Work Center (2021, 2022), participation in Skowhegan (2019), and a residency at MASS MoCA. Her solo exhibitions have been presented at Storage Gallery in New York and Real Art Ways in Connecticut.
