Zhidong Zhang is a Lecturer in Studio Art at Dartmouth College and also teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Zhang is a visual artist whose practice centers on photography and installation, exploring how image-making serves as historical and political intervention to reimagine narratives and cultivate alternative modes of understanding and belonging.
His artistic research reconstructs visual materials as sites of political potential, investigating image-making's role in historical intervention through projects like Far Away, From Home (2024) and Make A Scene (2020-2024). Zhang reimagines spaces and narratives to foster belonging, challenging conventional histories through layered installations and photographic reconstructions that center marginalized perspectives.
Zhang's notable recognitions include:
- Creator Labs Photo Fund
- Collective Futures Fund
- Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship
As an educator, Zhang mentors studio art students at Dartmouth and Tufts. His practice is supported by residencies at MASS MoCA, Center for Photography at Woodstock, Boston Center for the Arts, TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image, and participation in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture program.
