Lachell Workman is a Lecturer in Sculpture within the Foundations Program at the School of Art+Design, Purchase College, SUNY. She is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the cultural and ritualistic dimensions of Black mourning practices and urban visual culture.
Her educational background includes:
- BFA in Photography, University of Connecticut (2011)
- MFA in Visual Arts, Purchase College, SUNY (2015)
Workman’s research and artistic practice centers on the visualization of the Black body through forms such as the R.I.P. T-shirt, examining how grief and memory are materialized in inner-city landscapes. Her work bridges photography, sculpture, and installation, engaging with themes of ephemerality, cultural memory, and identity.
Her recent exhibitions include the 10th Berlin Biennale at KW Institute for Contemporary Art (2018) and In Practice: Another Echo at Sculpture Center (2018). She has exhibited at The Knockdown Center, We Buy Gold, and The Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE, and has been awarded residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Lighthouse Works, Shandaken Project at Storm King Art Center, Ox-Bow School of Art, and Vermont Studio Center.
She teaches courses such as 3D Processes and maintains a professional artistic practice accessible through her website.
