Abigail Lucien is a Haitian-American interdisciplinary artist and educator currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY). Their practice spans sculpture, literature, and time-based media, focusing on themes of (be)longing, futurity, myth, and place through an auto-ethnographic lens. By examining inherited colonial structures and systems of belief/care, Lucien interprets emotional states like loss, love, and grief as fluid processions rather than fixed outcomes.
- Past exhibitions: SculptureCenter (NY), MoMA PS1 (NY), Deli Gallery (NY), Tiwani Contemporary (London, UK), Museum of Contemporary Art Panamá, Frost Art Museum (Miami, FL), Atlanta Contemporary (GA), The Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia, PA)
- Residencies: Amant Studio & Research Residency (NY), Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (ME), Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts (Poland), Santa Fe Art Institute (NM), Ox-Bow School of Art (WI), The Luminary (MO)
Lucien’s work employs formal poetics and architectural vernacular to interrogate materiality and place, often using found objects and familiar surroundings to implicate the body in these explorations.
