Elizabeth Cowley

Elizabeth Cowley is a Professor and Department Head of Physiology and Biophysics at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine. She holds a BSc from University College London, a PhD from the University of Leicester, and completed postdoctoral research at institutions including UCSF, McGill, and Dalhousie. Her research focuses on oxidative stress mechanisms in lung diseases, particularly cystic fibrosis, aiming to develop novel therapies. Dr. Cowley teaches courses in human physiology, including Respiratory Physiology and Cell Physiology.

Her research spans ion channel biology, airway epithelial defense, and inflammatory responses. Notable contributions include studies on prostaglandin signaling in oxidative stress and potassium channel roles in anion secretion. She has published extensively since the 1990s, with recent work exploring heart failure pharmacology and gender representation in sport science research.
