Elizabeth A. Sharrow is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Policy and the Department of History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with affiliations in the Department of Political Science. She also serves as Director of Faculty Research at the UMass Institute for Social Science Research. Her research examines the gendered politics of public policy, focusing on Title IX’s impact on college athletics, intersectional identities (sex, race, sexuality, disability, class), LGBTQ+ rights, and family politics.
Sharrow holds a Ph.D. in Political Science (with a minor in Feminist and Critical Sexuality Studies) and an M.P.P. in Gender, Law, and Sports Policy from the University of Minnesota. Her work bridges historical and contemporary policy analysis, emphasizing institutional barriers to equity. She has authored/co-authored multiple award-winning publications, including *Equality Unfulfilled* (2023), which won the APSA Gladys M. Kammerer Award and the AERA Outstanding Book Award.
Her research is funded by organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and the Women’s Sports Foundation. She has led major projects like *Play to Lead* (2024) and collaborates with non-profits like Athlete Ally. Sharrow teaches courses on public policy, gender/race in policy history, and sports politics, and serves on editorial boards for *American Political Science Review* and *Politics & Gender*.
Her advocacy extends to public engagement, including a four-part ESPN docuseries on Title IX’s 50th anniversary (*37 Words*) and leadership roles in organizations like the Organization of American Historians (Distinguished Lecturer) and the Women’s Caucus for Political Science.
