Elizabeth A. Durham

Elizabeth A. Durham is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. She specializes in medical and political anthropology, focusing on global mental health, psychiatry, and the intersection of religion and conflict in Cameroon. Her work is affiliated with the African Studies Center, Center for Global Health Equity, and Science, Technology, and Society Program. She holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2022), M.Phil. from Oxford (2015), and B.A. from Carleton College (2012).

Her research explores secular psychiatric services in Cameroon amid rising Pentecostalism and armed conflict, emphasizing ethics in clinical and humanitarian settings. Recent publications address psychopharmaceuticals, trauma, and therapeutic politics. She teaches courses on medical anthropology and mental health (currently on leave in 2024-2025).
