Elise L. Ryan is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. Her roles include serving as Experiential Learning Coordinator and participating in the Provost Academy Courses, Vibrant Media Lab, and Center for Creativity. She holds a Ph.D. in English Renaissance Literature from Indiana University, Bloomington, with prior teaching experience at Columbus College of Art and Design.
Her research focuses on Renaissance poetry, Early Modern women's writing, visual culture, performance studies, and the intersection of literature with material and religious practices. She advocates interdisciplinary approaches, incorporating critical making practices into her teaching, such as lyric essays and video essays. Current projects include arts criticism through her Critical Insight Fellowship with Pittsburgh Public Theater and American Theater Magazine.
Teaching highlights include courses like Words & Images, Secret Pittsburgh, Medieval Imagination, and Milton to Minecraft: Art, Nature, Technology, emphasizing experiential learning both on and off campus. She prioritizes collaborative pedagogy and diverse voices in shaping classroom environments.
