Elisabeth Papineau is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health (École de santé publique) within the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Montreal. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology (1999). Her research focuses on gambling’s societal impacts, particularly in marginalized communities and online contexts, emphasizing geographic accessibility and health policy. Key affiliations include the National Institute of Public Health of Quebec (INSPQ) and the Réseau de recherche en santé des populations du Québec (RRSPQ).
Her 2016–2020 project, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, developed spatial indices (Exposure to Gambling Index and Vulnerability Index) to map geographic disparities in gambling access and inform public health interventions. She advocates for policies reducing health inequalities through environmental design and preventive measures.
Publications span gambling’s effects on youth, seniors, and cultural communities, with an emphasis on screen time and urban health. Her work bridges qualitative methods and epidemiology to address social determinants of health, aiming to create equitable environments.
