Eline Leijten is a Lecturer and researcher in Internet Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s Department of Transnational Legal Studies (Amsterdam Law & Technology Institute). She focuses on transparency in digital technology regulation, including GDPR, DSA, and AI Act compliance. Her work critiques the balance between fundamental rights protection and innovation in EU law.
Educated at Erasmus School of Law (Labour Law, 2012), Erasmus School of Economics (Financial Economics, 2012), and Leiden Law School (Law & Digital Technologies, 2022), she has a multidisciplinary background. Prior to academia, she founded Plugify (2016), a live music platform, earning awards like the TedxAmsterdamWomen Startup Award (2016). She also engages politically, including with D66’s 2020 election committee and board roles in foundations.
Her research emphasizes accountability in digital innovation and privacy in EdTech, influencing parliamentary discussions. Media engagements include interviews on child data privacy (Het Financieele Dagblad, 2022) and parental leave reforms (Radio 1, 2022).
