Elin Manker is an Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in Art History & Visual Studies at Umeå University's Department of Culture and Media Studies. Her research focuses on design history, design theory, and modernity from 1800 onwards, with particular emphasis on textile design, Swedish industrial design history, and the interplay between aesthetics, craftsmanship, and gender roles in design practices. She leads a Swedish Research Council-funded project on 'Blå blom' and Alternative Modernity, exploring non-modernist design principles and their industrial impacts.
Educated at Stockholm University, she earned her PhD in 2019 with a study on design criticism and practice in Sweden (1860–1890), examining German aesthetics' influence and the materiality of early industrial design. Her monograph Selma Giöbel. Modern textil kring 1900 (2023) analyzes textile design's role in Swedish cultural and gender history around 1900.
Her publications bridge material culture studies and design history, addressing topics like object analysis, popular aesthetics, and archival methodologies. Teaching spans all levels in Art History and Visual Studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to cultural production.
