Øystein Sjåstad is a Professor of Art History at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas within the Faculty of Humanities. His research focuses on European painting (1860–1900), Christian Krohg’s naturalism, semiotics, and comics. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oslo and has held prestigious positions including Fulbright Scholarships (2007/08, 2022) and a Munch Scholarship (2008). His post-doctoral work explored Christian Krohg’s naturalism through Émile Zola’s theories, supported by the Norwegian Research Council.
Teaching includes courses like 'Modernity, Visuality, and Sexuality in 19th-Century Art' and 'Aesthetics History.' His research groups include Aesthetics and Politics, International and Nordic Modernism, and Visual and Material Studies. Notable publications include Christian Krohg's Naturalism (2017) and A Theory of the Tache in 19th-Century Painting (2014). Awards highlight his contributions to Scandinavian art historiography.
His work bridges traditional art history with modern interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing semiotic analysis and cultural critique. Research trends in his articles address Scandinavian modernism, gender in art, and transnational artistic influences. He actively contributes to both academic discourse and public understanding of visual culture.
