Elif Akçalı is the Michael Durham Professor of Creativity and Associate Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Florida. She holds affiliate roles in the Florida Institute for Built Environment (FIBER) and the Engineering Innovation Institute (EII). Previously, she served as a UF Entrepreneurship Faculty Fellow at the Warrington College of Business Administration and was the 2013-2014 Creative Scholar-in-Residence in the School of Theater + Dance.
Her research spans inventory systems, supply chain optimization, lean production, sustainability, and creativity integration in education. She earned her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University (2001).
Her recent work emphasizes cross-disciplinary innovation, including poetry writing to enhance engineering education, choreographic methods in process improvement, and emergency logistics optimization. She has pioneered creative pedagogical approaches to foster divergent thinking in technical fields.
Key contributions include analytical models for remanufacturing systems, stochastic inventory policies, and healthcare simulation studies. Her work bridges engineering rigor with artistic creativity to address complex operational challenges.
