Elien Dalman is a postdoctoral researcher working at the intersection of sociology and demography at Stockholm University and Lund University. She is affiliated with the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA) and the Center for Economic Demography (CED) at Lund University.
Her research focuses on persistent and structural social inequalities, using linked Swedish census and register data from 1880 to the present. Dr. Dalman examines intergenerational, institutional, and structural drivers of inequality in educational and labor market outcomes as well as demographic trajectories. Her work investigates how socio-cultural groups (represented by name types including nobility, educated elites, and national minorities), gender, parenthood, and outsourcing of domestic work influence social mobility across generations.
Currently, she is leading the research project 'Surnames and social mobility across three centuries,' which analyzes how name information contributes to understanding social mobility patterns over 250 years (1750-2020), exploring whether surnames capture aspects of social background beyond traditional class indicators.
Dr. Dalman has supervised bachelor's and master's theses and taught courses in econometrics (using Stata), quantitative data analysis for social sciences (using R), and sociological theory. Her methodological expertise in quantitative analysis of historical and contemporary demographic data makes her a valuable resource for students interested in social inequality and demographic research.
