Elhanan Helpman is the Galen L. Stone Professor of International Trade at Harvard University's Department of Economics. He holds academic leadership roles including current Presidency of the International Economic Association, past Presidencies of the Israeli Economic Association and Econometric Society, and membership in prestigious academies like the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the British Academy.
Helpman earned his B.A. and M.A. in Economics from Tel Aviv University, followed by a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. His research pioneered 'new trade theory' and 'new growth theory,' emphasizing economies of scale and imperfect competition. Key works include Innovation and Growth in the Global Economy (with Gene Grossman) and Globalization and Inequality.
His research interests span international trade, economic growth, political economy, globalization impacts, labor market dynamics, and policy analysis. Recent studies focus on supply chain resilience, trade policy effects on innovation, electoral competition dynamics, and multinational firm behavior in global markets.
