Daron Acemoglu

Daron Acemoglu is an Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), holding one of the institution's highest faculty distinctions. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, American Philosophical Society, British Academy of Sciences, Turkish Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Econometric Society, European Economic Association, and Society of Labor Economists. He serves as co-director of the MIT Shaping the Future of Work Initiative and is a member of the Group of Thirty.

His research spans political economy, economic development, technological change, inequality, and labor economics, with foundational work on institutional determinants of prosperity as seen in bestsellers Why Nations Fail and Power and Progress. Recent scholarship critically examines how artificial intelligence, automation, and climate policies reshape labor markets, democratic institutions, and global economic trajectories through rigorous theoretical and empirical frameworks.
