Eleni Methymaki is a Departmental Lecturer in Public International Law at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Law, and a DPhil candidate under Professors Catherine Redgwell and Antonios Tzanakopoulos. She is affiliated with St Catherine’s College and the Athens Public International Law Centre. Her research focuses on domestic law’s role in international adjudication, supported by the Oxford Law Foundation.
Education includes LL.M. degrees from Cambridge (Class I), Glasgow (Distinction), and Athens (Distinction), as well as studies at Freie Universität Berlin. She participated in the Hague Academy of International Law’s 2018 session on International Inspections.
Her research spans international dispute settlement, domestic-international legal interplay, law of the sea, economic law, security law, and human rights. Recent work emphasizes inspections as governance tools and domestic courts’ roles in enforcing international law.
Teaching includes courses on Public International Law, Dispute Settlement, and Law of the Sea. She co-developed Leuphana University’s “International Sustainability Law” module and designed Oxford’s “Political Theory and Ideology in International Law” short course.
Professional roles include editorial leadership for the British Yearbook of International Law’s UKMIL section since 2016, and prior editorial work for Oxford’s Research Track and the Cambridge Journal of International and Comparative Law. She advises states and organizations on international law disputes, including before the ICJ.
Eleni’s legal practice includes Greek corporate litigation experience and current research in sustainability law and global security frameworks.
