Elena Ibáñez is a Professor in the Department of Cellular Biology, Physiology and Immunology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She holds a PhD in Biological Sciences (UAB, 1996) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Tufts University (2000–2001). Her research focuses on reproductive biology, genome integrity, embryonic stem cell derivation, and biomedical materials for regenerative medicine.
Education:
- PhD in Biological Sciences, UAB (1996)
- MSc in Biology, UAB (1990)
Research Interests: Her work explores mitochondrial metabolism in oocyte maturation, stem cell pluripotency, and nanomaterials for biomedical applications. Recent projects include investigating microplastics' impact on reproductive health and developing piezoelectric substrates for cell stimulation.
Key Projects:
- Principal Investigator in 'NANOPLASTICS AS EMERGING POLLUTANTS: INVESTIGATING RISKS TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH OF TERRESTRIAL MAMMALS' (2024–2028)
- Leading studies on embryo tagging via polysilicon barcodes for assisted reproduction (2012–2013)
Grants & Collaborations: Funded by institutions like the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, with collaborations extending to material science and veterinary medicine fields.
Labs/Teams: Active in Genome Integrity and Reproductive Biology research groups, focusing on translational applications like embryo tracking and biocompatible alloy development.
