Elena Balzamo is a Russian-born historian of Scandinavian languages and literature, currently serving as a Lecturer at the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) affiliated with Sorbonne University. She specializes in translation studies, Scandinavian and Russian literature, and folklore.
Her academic journey began with studies at Moscow University and Tbilisi University in Georgia. She completed her doctoral thesis on Scandinavian fairy tales at the University of Lille-III. She has been living in France since 1981 and has established herself as a prominent scholar and translator.
Dr. Balzamo's research interests focus on Scandinavian languages and literature, Russian literature, translation studies, folklore (particularly Scandinavian), literary criticism, and children's literature. Her work bridges academic scholarship with practical translation, exploring the nuances of cross-cultural literary transmission.
She has received numerous prestigious awards including the Swedish Academy Translation Prize (2001), Prix Sévigné Etranger (2010-2011), Swedish Academy Prize (2019), and the Gilbert Musy Program translation grant (2022). She was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Umeå University in Sweden.
As an educator, she teaches at EPHE and runs a translation seminar at the Swedish Institute in Paris. She is also a regular contributor to 'Le Monde des livres' and has authored several books on Scandinavian and Russian topics, including collections of folktales and literary criticism.
Her scholarly work extends to children's literature, where she has analyzed the works of authors like Topelius, Tove Jansson, and the Kalevala, contributing significantly to our understanding of Nordic children's literary traditions.
