Elena Baglioni

Elena Baglioni is a Professor in Global Supply Chain Management and Sustainability at Queen Mary University of London, School of Business and Management, Department of Business and Society. She joined the institution in 2011 and holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Bologna, an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS, and a summa cum laude degree in Political Sciences from the University of Bologna. Her research focuses on the political economy of global value chains, labour regimes, social reproduction, and ecological impacts in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Senegal. She co-directs the Centre on Labour, Sustainability and Global Production (CLaSP).

Elena’s work spans historical processes of development in low-income countries, agrarian political economy, and the political economy of natural resources. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Senegal examining poverty reduction, export agriculture, and land grabbing. Her recent research explores 'reproductive subsumption' through a Political Economy Fellowship from the ISRF, analyzing class dynamics, gender, and ecology in Senegambia.

Key publications include studies on labour control in Senegalese horticulture, global value chains as entrepreneurial capture, and the intersection of production and reproduction in neoliberal contexts. She has published in journals like Sociologia del Lavoro, Work, Employment and Society, and Journal of Economic Geography.

Awards include the ISRF Political Economy Fellowship. Her teaching includes courses on global supply chains and corporate environmental strategies. She currently supervises doctoral students researching sovereign territoriality in fisheries governance and other topics. Elena’s work bridges academic research with practical insights into global production systems and sustainability challenges.
