Professor Liam Campling is a political economist and Professor of International Business and Development at Queen Mary University of London. He holds a PhD in Development Studies from SOAS, University of London, and degrees in Politics and Modern History from the University of Manchester. His research focuses on global value chains, international trade policy, environmental governance, and the political economy of development. He has published extensively, including Capitalism and the Sea (2021), which won the IPEG 2022 Book Prize, and co-edited volumes such as Labour Regimes and Global Production (2022).
Campling’s work bridges political economy, environmental studies, and international relations, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to global production dynamics. He advises the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency and engages with NGOs, trade unions, and international organizations. His teaching focuses on linking theory to policy and practice, with a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
His research highlights environmental governance in global value chains, labor standards in EU trade agreements, and the political economy of maritime resources. Notable awards include the Journal of Common Market Studies’ 2019 Best Article Prize for work on EU labor provisions. He supervises multiple PhD students exploring labor regimes, global production networks, and environmental justice.
