Eleanor Townsley

Eleanor Townsley is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Sociology at Mount Holyoke College. She serves as Director of the Nexus program and Chair of its Journalism, Media, and Public Discourse track. Her interdisciplinary affiliations span the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Gender Studies, and the Entrepreneurship, Organizations, and Society Committee.

Townsley's research focuses on the sociology of intellectuals, media's role in public discourse, and the intersection of liberal arts education with career readiness. She has pioneered programs like Lynk, College 211, and LEAP Symposium, emphasizing reflective learning and real-world application.

Her academic contributions include a NEH Connections Grant ($100,000) to study inequality through global-local lenses and foundational work on 'trope theory' analyzing concepts like the '1960s' and 'interdisciplinary' in social contexts. Publications appear in American Journal of Sociology, Theory & Society, and New Left Review, alongside coauthoring Making Capitalism without Capitalists (2001).
