Eleanor Starkey is a Research Fellow at Northumbria University since January 2023, specializing in hydrology, flood risk management, and socio-hydrology. Her work integrates community engagement, citizen science, and innovative monitoring techniques to address environmental challenges. She leads projects like SuDS+, a Defra-funded initiative creating community-led sustainable drainage solutions, and UpStream, enhancing water quality through transnational collaboration. Previously, she held roles at Tyne Rivers Trust, Newcastle University, and JBA Consulting, focusing on natural flood management and catchment science.
Her research emphasizes bridging scientific practices with community needs, such as the Haltwhistle Burn citizen science project during her PhD (2013–2017). Notable projects include the National Green Infrastructure Facility and Yorkshire Natural Flood Management initiatives, funded by NERC and the Environment Agency. Starkey is a member of the British Hydrological Society and CIWEM, contributing to media discussions on nature-based solutions and urban resilience.
Starkey’s education includes a BSc (First Class) and MSc (Distinction) from Newcastle University, followed by a PhD in Civil Engineering on community-based monitoring for catchment management. Her work has been featured in Frontiers in Environmental Science, BBC News, and COP26 climate discussions, showcasing her impact on both academic and public spheres.
