Rob Lamb serves as an Honorary Professor (Professor in Practice) at Lancaster University's School of Mathematical Sciences while holding the position of Chief Scientist at JBA Group and Director of the JBA Trust. His dual academic-industry role bridges theoretical hydrological research with practical flood risk management applications.
His research focuses on hydrological risks and resources, risk and uncertainty assessment, climate adaptation, and flood management. Key research areas include extreme value theory, sustainable catchments, and water science, with particular emphasis on understanding and mitigating flood risks in changing climate conditions.
Lamb's recent publications (2024) address critical challenges in flood risk management, particularly regarding abrupt wave front floods and coping with 'uncertainty monsters' in risk assessment. His work demonstrates strong integration of historical data analysis with contemporary risk modeling approaches.
- Finalist, MacRobert Award for engineering innovation
Professor Lamb actively contributes to UK flood management policy through multiple advisory roles, including membership on the UK Flood Hydrology Roadmap Scientific and Technical Advisory Group and the Defra, Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales Joint R&D Programme Theme Advisory Group. His recent projects include the MBC Curriculum Co-Design Project (2023-2024) and Q-NFM (2017-2023), which quantified nature-based flood mitigation effects across large catchments.
He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Flood Risk Management and contributes to UK government committees focused on environmental risk management.
