Colin David Brown is a Professor in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York's Faculty of Sciences, appointed to a Chair in Environmental Science in 2004. With 35 years of research experience, he previously served as Head of Department (2010-2015) and Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Sciences (2015-2019).
His research spans integrated catchment management and environmental modelling, with core expertise in:
- Natural flood management using leaky barriers and hydrological modelling
- Water quality dynamics for nutrients and pesticides
- Pesticide fate/effects in agricultural systems
- Mathematical frameworks linking ecological and fate models
- Aquatic biodiversity conservation
Recent publications demonstrate interdisciplinary integration of hydrology, ecotoxicology, and agricultural science to address real-world environmental challenges, particularly in catchment-scale interventions and chemical risk assessment. His work bridges field experiments with process-based modelling across multiple scales.
Professor Brown leads major NERC-funded initiatives including the Integrated Catchment Solutions Programme (iCASP) and ECOMIX project, securing substantial research grants for freshwater quality and flood risk mitigation. He chairs the International Conference on Pesticide Behaviour in Soils, Water and Air and serves as a Trustee of the Freshwater Habitats Trust, while advising UK government through the Advisory Committee on Pesticides and chairing its Environmental Panel.
