Dr. Eleanor Baker is a Stipendiary Lecturer in Old and Middle English at Balliol College, University of Oxford, for the 2024/25 academic year. She also serves as the English Subject Lead for the University of Oxford's Astrophoria Foundation Year and co-Executive Officer of the Society for the Study of Medieval Languages and Literatures (SSMLL). Her DPhil ('References to the Material Text in Late Medieval English Religious Literature', 2022) was funded by the AHRC-DTP under Prof. Daniel Wakelin's supervision.
Her research focuses on late medieval material texts, folk horror, and creative-critical practices. She has published on medieval sermons, Chaucer pedagogy, and book-craft recipes. Her book Book Curses (2024, Bodleian Publishing) explores literary book curses and has received media coverage in The Spectator, TLS, and Fine Books & Collections.
Baker emphasizes public engagement, leading projects such as the Chaucer Here and Now Exhibition and managing the Oxford Mystery Cycle Plays. Her work bridges academia and broader audiences through initiatives like the Oxford Medieval Church Crawl and Medieval Studies Pilgrimage Day.
