Eldar Shafir is the Class of 1987 Professor of Behavioral Science and Public Policy at Princeton University, holding dual appointments in the Department of Psychology and the School of Public & International Affairs. He serves as the inaugural Director of Princeton’s Kahneman-Treisman Center for Behavioral Science and Public Policy. His research focuses on decision-making in contexts of poverty, cognitive science, and behavioral economics, with emphasis on applying behavioral insights to public policy.
Shafir earned his B.A. from Brown University and his Ph.D. from MIT. He has held leadership roles, including Past President of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making, Vice-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Behavior, and membership in the Forum’s Global Council on the Future of Behavioral Sciences. He co-founded ideas42, a behavioral science R&D lab, and served on President Barack Obama’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability.
His notable works include the co-authored book *Scarcity: Why Having Too Little Means So Much* (2013) and the edited volume *The Behavioral Foundations of Public Policy* (2012). He has received prestigious recognitions such as the Guggenheim Fellowship and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
