Dr. Eftekhar Eftekharpour is a Professor in the Department of Physiology & Pathophysiology and the Regenerative Medicine Program at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. His research examines molecular mechanisms in neuronal health and disease, focusing on oxidative stress, protein degradation systems, and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and spinal cord injury.
- Education
- PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Saskatchewan (2001)
- MSc in Human Histology, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (1991)
- BSc in Animal Sciences, University of Tehran (1989)
Research Interests: Aging and neurodegeneration, lysosomal dysfunction, thioredoxin system deficits, neuron-glial interactions, and stem cell biology. His work explores nuclear damage in neurodegenerative diseases and translational therapies for neuronal cell death.
Scientific Awards:
- Synthes Basic Science Award (2007)
- Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation Fellowship (2005-2007)
- Lawson Foundation Fellowship (2004-2005)
- Arthur Smyth Scholarship (2000-2001)
Dr. Eftekharpour's lab investigates autophagy-apoptosis crosstalk, oxidative stress, and nuclear events in neurodegeneration. His team collaborates with the Spinal Cord Research Centre, Manitoba Neuroscience Network, and national consortia on neurodegenerative diseases and oxidative stress.
