Dr. Edward W. Marshall is a Research Fellow at the Chair of Endogenous Geodynamics, GeoCenter Northern Bavaria, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). His work focuses on magmatic processes, from planetary-scale geochemical cycling to localized volcanic conduit systems. He specializes in Icelandic volcanism, including recent eruptions at Fagradalsfjall and Sundhnúksgígar.
His research explores the formation of Earth's crust and lithospheric mantle, magma dynamics in rift systems, and geochemical provincialism in the East African Rift. Key interests include:
- Magma storage and transport mechanisms
- Timescales of eruption priming and dike propagation
- Isotopic signatures of mantle sources
- Volcanic hazard implications of magma-crust interactions
Dr. Marshall's publications emphasize high-resolution sampling of lava compositions to decode rapid magmatic changes. His work integrates field observations, geochemical analysis, and diffusion chronometry to model subsurface processes.
He co-leads FAU's state-of-the-art geochemistry laboratory, utilizing laser ablation ICP-MS for elemental and isotopic analysis. His collaborative projects include fieldwork in Iceland and Nicaragua, often partnering with institutions like INETER and IODP-DFG.
