Edward Parkin

Dr. Edward Parkin is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedicine at Lancaster University, affiliated with the Centre for Ageing Research. His work bridges neurodegenerative disease and cancer biology.

• Education: PhD (Plant Biochemistry, University of Central Lancashire, 1995); BSc (Biochemistry, Lancaster University, 1990).

His research explores the proteolysis of cell proteins, particularly the amyloid precursor protein (APP) in Alzheimer's disease and its role in prostate cancer metastasis. He investigates ADAM enzymes in α-secretase cleavage of APP, the neuroprotective properties of sAPPα, and Notch signaling in prostate and colorectal cancers. His team develops gene therapy strategies to enhance protective protein production.

Recent publications highlight his focus on Alzheimer's disease mechanisms, including neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides and gene therapy approaches. He also contributes to understanding autism spectrum disorder risk factors through biochemical analysis.

Dr. Parkin mentors postgraduate researchers and engages in public outreach via the Defying Dementia initiative, organizing events and updating educational resources. He serves on committees for the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer's Research UK.

His laboratory collaborates on projects like the Defying Dementia Summer Internship, integrating student training with neurodegeneration research.
