Edward M Schaeffer is the Chair of the Department of Urology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and Program Director of the Genitourinary Oncology Program at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. He holds the Harold Binstein Professorship in Urology and is an active clinician specializing in prostate cancer. His research focuses on prostate cancer diagnosis, treatment outcomes, molecular biology, and disparities in at-risk populations. Dr. Schaeffer leads major clinical trials, including the PREVENT trial comparing biopsy methods to reduce infections, and chairs the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Prostate Cancer Guidelines Committee.
Education: MD and PhD from the University of Chicago (2001), residency and internship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Research Interests: Dr. Schaeffer's work addresses prostate cancer detection methods (e.g., transperineal vs. transrectal biopsy), genomic profiling, and racial disparities in cancer outcomes. He integrates molecular biology, imaging, and AI to improve diagnosis and treatment strategies.
Articles: His recent work emphasizes genomic signatures, MRI-guided biopsy optimization, and racial disparities in prostate cancer detection and treatment response. Studies highlight the transformative potential of transperineal biopsy and AI-driven pathology analysis.
Awards: Recipient of the 2009 American Urological Association Rising Star Award and 2013 ASCO Clinical Cancer Advance Award for contributions to prostate cancer care.
Grants & Advising: Leads国家级 grants and clinical trials. Advises on NCI Genitourinary Cancers Steering Committee and editorial boards of Journal of Urology and Urology Case Reports.
Labs/Teams: Central to the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center's prostate cancer initiatives and the NCI-funded Prostate Cancer SPORE program.
