Edward Lotto serves as Associate Professor in the Department of English at Lehigh University, where he has held continuous faculty appointments since 1983. He previously directed the Writing Program (1990-1997 and 2006-2016) and transformed the Learning Center into today’s Writing and Math Center.
His educational background includes:
- PhD from Indiana University (1980)
Lotto's research centers on Rhetoric and Composition, with pioneering work in Writing Center Theory and evolving interests in Environmental Literature and Cultural Studies. His scholarship examines language's role in shaping human understanding, from medieval epistemology in Piers Plowman to contemporary explorations of nature's grounding function in postmodern thought and fantasy epics like The Lord of the Rings.
Publication trends reveal a clear trajectory: early foundational work on writing center pedagogy (1980s) expanded into interdisciplinary environmental studies (1990s-2000s), consistently bridging composition theory with broader cultural analysis.
His recognition includes:
- National Writing Centers Association 1987 award for outstanding writing center scholarship
Lotto actively mentors through graduate composition practicums while teaching innovative courses including Environmental Imagination and Visions of Evil. His service includes editorial leadership of The Writing Center Journal (1991-1994) and executive roles in national writing associations.
He directs Lehigh's Writing and Math Center, maintaining its status as a model academic support institution developed from his original Learning Center directorship.
