Alfred Hornung is a Professor and Chair of English and American Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. He has held leadership roles including Vice Dean, Chair, and Dean of various departments and served on national and international review boards. His research spans Comparative Multi-Ethnic Studies, Life Writing, Interculturalism, and Postmodernism.

Scientific awards include the 2013 Carl Bode–Norman Holmes Pearson Prize and the 2014 Research Professorship of Rhineland-Palatinate. He has been a Fellow of the National Humanities Center (1980–1981) and Permanent Fellow at Peking University (2004).
