Mary Helen Washington is a Distinguished University Professor in the English Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. She specializes in 20th and 21st century African American literature, with a focus on the Black Literary Left and cultural history. Her research explores intersections of race, politics, and literary movements, particularly during the 1950s Cold War era.
Previously, she served as Director of Black Studies at the University of Detroit (1976–1980) and taught at the University of Massachusetts-Boston (1980–1990). She was President of the American Studies Association (1996–1997) and received the Carl Bode-Norman Holmes Pearson Prize for lifetime achievement (2015).
Her notable works include The Other Blacklist: The African American Literary and Cultural Left of the 1950s (2014), Memory of Kin (1991), and edited collections like Invented Lives (1987). Current research focuses on Afterlives: Legacies of the Black Literary Left.
