Edward Kac is a Professor in the Department of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where he has been affiliated since 1997. He holds a BA from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1985), an MFA from SAIC (1990), and a PhD from the University of Wales, Great Britain (2003). His work bridges art and biotechnology, exploring themes like genetic engineering, biosemiotics, and interactive media. Kac’s installations and projects have been exhibited globally, including at the Pompidou Center (Paris), Tate Modern (London), and the Museum of Modern Art (New York). His most notable award is the Golden Nica from Ars Electronica, recognizing his contributions to media art.
He teaches courses such as Art and Technology: 1900 to Now and Art and Biotechnology, focusing on the intersection of art with emerging technologies. His research investigates ethical, social, and political dimensions of biotechnology, including projects involving genetically modified organisms and bio-art. Kac’s work is held in prestigious collections like MoMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and ZKM Museum.
Current courses in Fall 2025 include seminars on art history and theory, sound practices, and biotechnology. His pedagogical approach emphasizes critical engagement with technological advancements and their cultural implications.
