Edward Albert Hurvitz

Edward A. Hurvitz, MD, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Michigan Medical School. A James W. Rae Collegiate Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, he specializes in Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. His clinical focus spans adult and pediatric cerebral palsy care, electroneuromyography, congenital disabilities, and neuromuscular skeletal issues.

• Education: MD from Wayne State College of Medicine (1984); Residency at Sinai Hospital of Detroit (1988); Fellowship in Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Michigan Health System (1989).

Dr. Hurvitz's research centers on improving health and function in individuals with cerebral palsy across the lifespan. He co-founded the Cerebral Palsy Research Consortium of Michigan and the International Cerebral Palsy Health Promotion Group, emphasizing body composition, fitness, and upper extremity rehabilitation in CP patients. His work is supported by grants from the NIH, NIDILRR, United Cerebral Palsy, and industry partners.

He has served as chief of service for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Ann Arbor VA hospital and is actively involved in national initiatives like the Cerebral Palsy Research Network’s Executive Committee. His contributions have been recognized with multiple patient accolades, reflecting his patient-centered approach to care.
