Edward A. Hurvitz, MD is a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. He served as James W. Rae Collegiate Professor and Chair of PM&R from 2006 until early 2024, and previously as Chief of Rehabilitation Service at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center (1991-1996). Currently, he serves as Michigan Medicine Learning Health System Clinical Champion and LHS Collaboratory co-director.
His educational background includes a Pediatric Rehabilitation Fellowship at the University of Michigan (1989) and PM&R Residency at Sinai Hospital of Detroit (1988).
Dr. Hurvitz specializes in pediatric-onset disabilities with lifelong focus on cerebral palsy (CP), researching health/fitness, pain management, and health outcomes in adolescents/adults with CP. His work addresses functional outcomes, care quality improvement, preventive screening, and Learning Health System applications for CP care.
His recent publications (2021-2024) reveal consistent emphasis on adult CP challenges including chronic pain mechanisms, bone fragility, fracture rehabilitation pathways, and opioid prescription patterns. These studies predominantly utilize registry data and cohort analyses to address critical gaps in adult disability healthcare systems.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Chambers Lifespan award (2013) from the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine
Dr. Hurvitz has secured research funding as PI/Co-PI from NIH, NIDILRR, United Cerebral Palsy, and industry partners. He previously co-led the department's T32 rehabilitation research training program, mentoring emerging scientists in rehabilitation medicine.
He actively contributes to national initiatives including the Cerebral Palsy Research Network (steering committee), NINDS/NIH Children's Motor Study Group, and leadership roles in AAPMR and the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.
