Edith X Chen

Edith X Chen is a Research Fellow of Global History at Exeter College, University of Oxford. Her work focuses on the pre-modern Near East, particularly the Mongol Empire in Iran and the dynamics of legal and social history in post-classical Eurasia. She holds a PhD from Princeton University's Department of Near Eastern Studies (2021), a Master's in Middle East Studies from Harvard University, and a BA in Public Policy and Islamic Studies from Duke University. She also attended Boston College Law School and completed a Fulbright at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Research: Explores interactions between Mongol rulers and Persian Gulf dynasties, emphasizing peaceful vassalage relationships and Islamic legal evolution. Current projects include a monograph on Mongol vassalage systems and articles on medieval Islamic law. Teaching: Leads courses on the Global Middle Ages at both undergraduate and graduate levels, specializing in transnational history and medieval legal frameworks.
