Edit Tóth is a Professor of Instruction in the Department of Art and Art History within the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). She teaches comprehensive art history surveys alongside specialized courses in modern art, Japanese art, feminist art, Asian art, American art, photography, cinema, and modern architecture, drawing from extensive prior teaching experience at Virginia Commonwealth University, Penn State University, and Georgia State University.
Her scholarly focus centers on interdisciplinary intersections of art, design, architecture, photography, and cinema, with critical examinations of subjectivity in media images, technology and phenomenological frameworks, gender activism, and cross-cultural dialogues between Western and Eastern artistic traditions. Her influential monograph "Design and Visual Culture from the Bauhaus to Contemporary Art: Optical Deconstructions" (Routledge, 2018) reinterprets Bauhaus works as mediatized objects through innovative theoretical lenses.
Publications from 2010-2021 reveal consistent thematic trajectories across modern and contemporary art, with concentrated analysis on Bauhaus legacies, Dada interventions, and transnational artistic exchanges. Her work persistently investigates gendered dimensions of artistic production and technological mediation, featuring critical studies of Marcel Breuer, Moholy-Nagy, and Lajos Kassák in prominent venues including Grey Room and Modernism/modernity.
She has secured competitive research funding through prestigious awards:
- Paul Mellon Foundation for British Art grant
- Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts grant
- Henry Moore Foundation research and travel grant
A dedicated educator, Tóth emphasizes collaborative knowledge creation through dynamic classroom discourse and digital platforms, while her funded research projects advance scholarship in Central European visual culture and the theoretical frameworks connecting artistic movements across temporal and geographic boundaries.
