Earl Lewis is the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. He serves as founding director of the U-M Center for Social Solutions, addressing diversity/race, water, and the future of work. Previously, he was president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (2013–2018), provost at Emory University (2004–2012), and dean of Rackham Graduate School at U-M (1998–2004). Lewis holds an undergraduate degree from Concordia College and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
Research Interests: Lewis focuses on African American social history, race/class dynamics, urban studies, and public policy. His work spans institutional reform in higher education, diversity initiatives, and interdisciplinary approaches to historical analysis. Key themes include the intersection of race and power in urban contexts, the role of affirmative action, and the societal benefits of diversity.
