Isis Settles is a Professor of Psychology and Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, holding dual appointments in Women's and Gender Studies. She serves as LSA Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and holds the University Diversity and Social Transformation Professorship. She earned her BA from Harvard College and PhD in Psychology from the University of Michigan. Her research employs an intersectional lens to examine experiences of unfair treatment among marginalized groups, particularly Black communities and women, and explores protective strategies like racial identity. Current projects include faculty of color experiences and diversity in interdisciplinary teams.
Dr. Settles teaches courses such as Topics in Black World Studies (AAS 358) and Topics in Personality and Social Contexts (PSYCH 390). Her work is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and National Science Foundation. She leads the Multiple Identity Intersections Lab, using qualitative and quantitative methods to study mistreatment in academic and workplace settings.
