Tabbye M. Chavous is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan (U-M), affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. She also holds a courtesy professorship in the Marsal Family School of Education. As Vice Provost for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, she leads U-M’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), overseeing strategic initiatives, faculty development, and institutional diversity policies. Additionally, she serves as Director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity and Associate Vice President for Research.
Her research focuses on identity and motivation processes among Black secondary and postsecondary students, diversity climates in educational settings, and factors influencing STEMM identity development among racially minoritized students. Supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, NIH, Spencer Foundation, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, her work emphasizes academic persistence and positive development of diverse Black youth and families.
Dr. Chavous has co-directed the Center for the Study of Black Youth in Context, training students, postdocs, and early career scholars. Her leadership spans departmental, college, and university-wide roles over 25 years at U-M, including advising the Provost on academic affairs and serving as a presidential adviser on DEI strategy.
