Frieda Ekotto is the Lorna Goodison Collegiate Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies, Comparative Literature, and Francophone Studies at the University of Michigan. Her work bridges critical race theory, gender studies, and postcolonial literature with a focus on Francophone Africa and the diaspora. Ekotto earned her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Minnesota and has held leadership roles, including chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (2014–2018). She is renowned for groundbreaking studies of Jean Genet, African cinema, and LGBTQIA2S+ narratives in Sub-Saharan contexts.

Ekotto’s research interrogates how race, law, and sexuality intersect in literary and visual culture. Notable works include Race and Sex across the French Atlantic (2011) and Don’t Whisper Too Much (2019), a novel exploring same-sex relationships in Cameroon. She has produced documentaries like Vibrancy of Silence (2017), amplifying Sub-Saharan women’s creative voices. Awards include the MLA presidency and honorary doctorates.
Her teaching spans innovative courses on postcolonial narratives, Francophone cinema, and legal discourse. Ekotto’s interdisciplinary approach challenges Eurocentric frameworks, emphasizing decolonial methodologies and African intellectual traditions.
