Eamonn Reading is an Associate Professor in Molecular Biosciences at the University of Southampton. He leads research on membrane proteins and multidrug efflux pumps, using mass spectrometry and molecular biology approaches. His work focuses on bacterial antibiotic resistance mechanisms and structural biology of viral entry pathways. He is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow (2019-2027) and previously held a BBSRC Future Leader Fellowship (2016-2019).
Education: MSci in Chemistry (University of Bristol, 2015), DPhil in Structural Biology (University of Oxford, 2015). Postdoctoral research at King's College London (2015–2019).
Research Interests: Membrane proteins, mass spectrometry, multidrug efflux systems, lipid interactions, structural biology of viral entry, antibiotic resistance mechanisms.
Current Projects: Investigating structural dynamics of membrane proteins in native environments (Medical Research Council-funded) and developing flow sculpting techniques for protein analysis (Time Travel project).
Teaching: Leads courses on antibacterial drug mechanisms (BIOL3027) and supervises the Bioscience Business module (BIOL3058). Serves as a personal academic tutor for BIOL1030 (How to Think Like a Scientist).
Awards: UKRI Future Leaders Fellow (2019–2027), BBSRC Future Leader Fellow (2016–2019).
Supervision: Currently mentoring PhD students Ryan James Lawrence and Polina Heatley in Biological Sciences.
Labs/Teams: Member of the Precision Biosciences Innovation Hub, Institute for Life Sciences, and Molecular and Precision Biosciences research groups.
