Hiroshi Nikaido is a Professor in the Division of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology, specializing in bacterial membrane biology and antibiotic resistance mechanisms. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of bacterial membrane permeability barriers, non-specific and specific channel proteins, and multidrug efflux transport systems. Key projects include studies on outer membrane porins in Escherichia coli, mycobacterial cell wall composition, and the AcrAB-TolC efflux pump system.
Research Interests:
- Structure and function of bacterial outer membranes
- Diffusion mechanisms of antibiotics and inhibitors
- Multidrug efflux systems and their role in antibiotic resistance
- Mycobacterial cell wall lipid bilayers and intrinsic resistance
Publications highlight groundbreaking work on efflux-mediated antibiotic resistance, efflux pump comparison in pathogens, and structural insights into AcrB. His studies address fundamental questions in microbial physiology and clinical challenges posed by drug-resistant pathogens.
