Professor Vassiliy Bavro is a structural biologist at the University of Essex, School of Life Sciences, specializing in membrane protein crystallography and integrative structural biology. His research focuses on bacterial transport systems involved in antibiotic resistance and ion channels, particularly their roles in disease mechanisms. He holds a Professorship in Structural Microbiology and leads the MSc Molecular Medicine program.
Education: PhD from European Molecular Biology Laboratory (2003), MSc from University of East London and Sofia University (1996), and BSc from Sofia University (1994).
Research interests include structural mass-spectrometry, mycobacterial lipid transport (MmpL7), and efflux pumps such as AcrAB-TolC. His work bridges protein structure-function relationships with clinical relevance in antibiotic resistance. Recent studies explore Salmonella surface antigen interactions and efflux pump evolution across Acinetobacter and E. coli.
Leadership roles include Director of MSc Molecular Medicine and Convenor of the Protein Structure and Function Group. Collaborative work includes Birmingham Fellow roles (2012–2016) and postdoctoral research at Oxford and Cambridge.
Labs/Teams: His lab investigates membrane protein structures and their roles in pathogenesis, with emphasis on multidrug resistance mechanisms and structural biology techniques.
