Duncan MacRae is an Associate Professor of Ancient Greek & Roman Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-director of the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion. His research focuses on Roman history from the late Republic to Late Antiquity, particularly the intersections of religion, cultural life, and the sociology of knowledge. He is affiliated with the Graduate Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology (AHMA), the History Department, and the Berkeley Centers for Jewish Studies and the Study of Religion.
- Education: BA in Classics from Trinity College Dublin, PhD in Ancient History from Harvard University
His work examines religious change, the history of temporality, and Latin epigraphy. Current projects include Roman Futures: An Essay in Cultural History and a short book titled Religion in the Roman World. His publications span Roman religion, ancient historiography, and the material culture of the Roman Empire.
MacRae emphasizes integrating textual and material evidence, with a particular focus on Latin epigraphy. His recent articles explore themes such as Roman-Jewish treaty narratives, Mercury worship in Pompeii, and the historiography of early Christianity. He is committed to bridging classical studies with broader interdisciplinary dialogues.
