Dr. Bryan C. Brinkman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Religions at Missouri State University, affiliated with the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. He specializes in ancient Mediterranean history, with a focus on the Roman Empire and mass communication in antiquity, including Greek and Latin inscriptions and acclamations. He coordinates the Global Studies program and teaches courses on classical civilizations and global studies.
Education: PhD in Ancient History (Brown University, 2016), M.A. in History (University of Washington, 2008), B.A. in Classics and History (University of Utah, 2006). He has held fellowships from the University of Cologne (2013-2014) and the German Archaeological Institute (2013).
His research investigates ancient religion, cultural interaction, and epigraphy. Key works include co-editing Beyond Egypt: Relations and Imaginations of the Ancient Past (2022) and co-authoring Life in Antiquity (forthcoming). His work bridges textual analysis with social theory, exploring how inscriptions and acclamations shaped public discourse in antiquity.
Awards include the Alfried Krupp Fellowship (2014-2015) and Gerda Henkel Fellowship (2013). He has presented over 20 papers globally, including at the Archaeological Institute of America and American Philological Association meetings.
Teaching spans classical mythology, Greek/Roman civilizations, and global studies. His lab/work involves collaborative projects on ancient epigraphy and digital humanities methods.
