Douglas Hamilton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on understanding how wildfires and natural aerosols interact within Earth System processes, including their impacts on climate, biogeochemical cycles, and ocean health. He holds a PhD from the University of Leeds (2016) and an MSc from the University of East Anglia (2012).
Key research areas include aerosol coupling across Earth's spheres (solid surface, oceans, atmosphere, biosphere), fire regime changes affecting atmospheric energy balance and air quality, and aerosol nutrient impacts on marine productivity. Recent work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, such as the AERO-MAP modeling framework and community-based air quality monitoring in northeastern North Carolina.
Publications highlight advancements in aerosol composition analysis, iron solubility dynamics, and fire emission modeling. He actively contributes to international initiatives like the SOLAS science community and FLARE (Fire science Learning AcRoss the Earth System) working group, fostering equity and collaboration in geosciences.
