Nicholas Meskhidze is a Professor in the Department of Marine Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University (NC State), within the College of Sciences. He holds a PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology and has postdoctoral experience at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. His research focuses on aerosol-climate interactions, remote sensing applications, and marine biogeochemical cycles. Meskhidze teaches courses in Atmospheric Physics and Biogeochemical Cycles.
Education: PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from Georgia Tech; Diploma in Physics from Tbilisi State University. Former roles include postdoctoral fellowships at NASA and NC State faculty since 2006.
Research interests include aerosol properties, sea spray emissions, and the role of dust and iron in ocean productivity. He leads interdisciplinary projects using remote sensing (e.g., HSRL, CALIPSO) and global models (e.g., GEOS-Chem, CATCH) to study aerosol impacts on climate and ecosystems. His work bridges atmospheric processes with marine biology, emphasizing feedback mechanisms between aerosols and ocean systems.
Key publications highlight advancements in aerosol radiative effects, PM2.5 monitoring via lidar, and iron solubility dynamics. He advises numerous graduate students and collaborates on NASA missions and international workshops. Meskhidze’s lab focuses on instrument development (e.g., aerosol spectrometers) and field campaigns (e.g., EPCAPE, KORUS-AQ).
